Vivian has drawn "fish" continuously in several of her exhibitions. The reasons for drawing fish can be illustrated by her academic background. Vivian was educated in US, the Wesleyan University, which locates at a very small town without much facilities. People have to buy food in small groceries. These groceries usually sells sliced frozen processed meat. She found that foreign people might not even know how these meat come from ( the processing procedure) and some of them think that slaughtering is just too terrible and bloody. She thought that slaughtering is just common scene that can be seen in wet market easily in Hong Kong. Therefore, she drawn to mock them from having narrow horizons and being so foolish.
In her collection, she uses different body parts of fresh fish (head, intestine, internal organs) to show the real face of it( instead of the processed fillet). She used sharp colors to give a gutty and bloody feeling to the audience.
The works of Vivian Ho to me is very special and cute. The style of the drawings is quite cartooning, however, the way that she performs cool. I appreciate her advocate that everyone can be an artist and everyone can express their feeling through art free. The exchange of t-shirt is good idea. The interaction between the artist and public increased and public can get what they want to express by the drawings on the t-shirt. The process of exchanging the t-shirt must be interesting. The drawing on the MTR was also special. I wonder that what are the other passengers on the MTR see them and I see that the drawing is funny.
ReplyDeleteFor the fish collection, the drawings are very authentic, she used sharp color let the feel of bloody stand-out. When I first visit the blog and see the photos, I also think that the drawings are bloody.

The artwork you have chosen is very refreshing and impressive. It seems that Vivian has just started her career and finished the first collection, which is inspired by the difference of Hong Kong and the western lifestyle. It is interesting to know that Vivian wanted to highlight such culture difference instead of delivering a bitter idea about slaughtering especially when she paint the work with “happy” colours.
ReplyDeleteI can see her try to practice art in a lively way and promote art passionately. Besides, I am also interested in knowing if she will continue her artwork in this horrible style and will she try other form of art.
